Character concept from an art test I did a while back, for a company that will remain unnamed, right before I got the job at Kixeye. This one was all about the silhouette, but I also tried a new method of mixing colored lineart and paint, which worked out well enough that I'd like to try it again.
The bare toes are a genius touch. He's got all that armor, and you know he does kick people during fights, but he's so badass he doesn't need shoes. Very cool.
I also love the hash marks on his neck haha. Way cooler than if he counted on his arm.
Did the feet that way b/c it's something I haven't seen a lot of before. Thought about marks on the arm, but I needed armor there to enhance the silhouette.
All I could think when making the character was "Massive character wielding a gigantic sword? I've GOT to make a character directly based on one of my old teddy bears!"
My approach was more Technology-based, though, as for my story, the creatures were another batch of extraterrestrials. But they were extraterrestrials who had JUST started flying across the galaxy, so they were friendly to humans and less likely to go "You are but insects to us... Our civilization is much older..."
Nah. The Gud'Ari were more likely to go "This fermented beverage... Beer? Can we have more beer? ... YAY!" *chug-chug-chug* "We will aid you in your battle against the darkness! HOOOOO-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"
Seeing a dark skinned orc is a good change from usual green skinned behemont concept sticked to orcs. Very cool.
